1. Who This Policy Covers

References to “Midpoint”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the Midpoint mobile app, website, beta services and related support channels. Midpoint is currently an early-stage product, not a large company. We still aim to handle personal information in a way that is clear, careful and consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles where they apply.

The Australian Privacy Principles are set out in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). This Policy is structured around APP 1 to APP 13 and the OAIC guidance for app privacy policies.

2. Personal Information We Collect

Depending on how you use Midpoint, we may collect or hold:

  • Account information, including your name, username, email address, authentication method, password credentials where applicable, and profile photo.
  • Home base and location information, including saved address labels, approximate coordinates, Google place identifiers, selected meeting areas and travel preferences.
  • Social planning information, including friend requests, friend relationships, plan titles, invited participants, proposed times, votes, swipes, shortlist activity, winners and saved places.
  • Venue information, including place names, categories, addresses, maps links, ratings, photos, opening details, price indicators, websites and booking links from third-party providers.
  • Device and usage information, including app interactions, session state, push notification tokens, diagnostics, security logs and basic performance data.
  • Support information you send to us, such as emails, deletion requests, feedback, screenshots or issue reports.

We do not intentionally collect sensitive information such as health information, religious beliefs, political opinions, racial or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, criminal records or government identifiers unless you choose to include that information in something you send us.

3. How We Collect Information

We collect personal information when you:

  • Create an account, sign in with email, Google or Apple, or update your profile.
  • Set a home base, search for addresses, create a plan, invite friends, vote on times or swipe through venue cards.
  • Save places, open maps or venue links, join a beta list, contact support or submit feedback.
  • Use the app in a way that creates technical records needed for security, reliability or debugging.

We may also receive limited information from service providers such as Google Maps Platform, Apple, Google sign-in, push notification services and hosting providers when those services are needed to run Midpoint.

4. Why We Use Information

We collect, hold, use and disclose personal information to:

  • Create, authenticate, secure and support your account.
  • Calculate fair midpoint areas between selected friends or home bases.
  • Recommend restaurants, cafes, bars, parks, activities and other places near a relevant midpoint.
  • Let friends send requests, create plans, vote on times, swipe through venue cards, save places and see the selected winner.
  • Send important app notifications, such as friend requests, plan voting prompts and plan updates, if notifications are enabled.
  • Improve app quality, search relevance, reliability, security and beta testing workflows.
  • Respond to support, access, correction, deletion, complaint and safety requests.
  • Comply with law, App Store requirements, platform rules and security obligations.

5. Location and Address Privacy

Your home base is used to calculate midpoint areas and plan recommendations. We do not intend to show your full saved address publicly. Friends and plan participants may see information derived from your home base or selected location where it is needed to make a plan work, such as an approximate midpoint area, travel result or venue shortlist.

You should only add or use another person’s address, location or contact details if you have permission to do so.

6. Disclosure and Third-Party Services

We may disclose personal information to service providers that help us operate Midpoint, including:

  • Google Maps Platform for address search, place discovery, place details, maps links, photos and location-related functionality.
  • Apple and Google for sign-in, identity verification signals and platform functionality.
  • Apple Push Notification service and related infrastructure for push notification delivery.
  • Hosting, database, email, analytics, diagnostics and security providers used to run the app and website.
  • Professional advisers or authorities where reasonably necessary for legal, safety, fraud prevention or compliance reasons.

Some providers may store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States or other regions where their infrastructure operates. We take reasonable steps to choose reputable providers and limit disclosure to what is needed for the relevant feature.

7. Direct Marketing and Trending Suggestions

Midpoint may show in-app suggestions such as trending dinner spots, cocktail bars, cafes or activities near a relevant area. We may also send product updates or beta communications if you ask to join the beta or otherwise consent. You can opt out of marketing emails by using the unsubscribe option where available or contacting us.

We do not sell your personal information. If Midpoint later introduces sponsored venues, affiliate links or paid placements, those features should be labelled in the product experience.

8. Security, Quality and Retention

We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, unauthorised access, modification and disclosure. These steps may include authentication controls, access restrictions, secure session storage, database controls, transport security, logging and provider security features.

We aim to keep personal information accurate, complete and up to date for the purposes for which we use it. You can help by keeping your profile and home base current.

We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably needed for Midpoint’s app features, safety, support, legal, security, dispute resolution and backup purposes. When information is no longer needed, we take reasonable steps to delete or de-identify it unless we are required or permitted to keep it.

9. Access, Correction and Deletion

You may request access to personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct information that is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading. We may need to verify your identity before responding.

You can also request deletion of your account and associated app data. See our Data Deletion page for the current process.

10. Children and Safety

Midpoint is not intended for children under 13 or below the minimum age required in your region. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child where consent is required, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

Midpoint is designed for planning real-world meetups with people you know. You are responsible for using caution when meeting others offline.

11. Complaints

If you believe Midpoint has mishandled your personal information, contact us first so we can understand and respond to the issue. Please include enough detail for us to identify your account, the concern and the outcome you are seeking.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may be able to contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
